- IBM British Ring No 25 Convention 2024 Review
IBM British Ring No 25 Convention 2024 Review As an IBM and British Ring No.25 member, I had been looking forward to this convention for nearly a year since booking. As we would be meeting in Llandudno, Wales, my family stayed with me so that they could enjoy a seaside break while I participated in the convention. If you attended, you will already know that this was an excellent 3 day event from Friday the 13th to Sunday the 15th September. However, for those able to attend from Thursday, "The Magic Bar Live" hosted unofficial events. I have been a member of the ring for 18 months and as this was my first convention, it was a great opportunity to meet friends and make new ones. I can honestly say this is the friendliest club you can join. Everyone made me feel very welcome. Those who I was able to meet and chat with have made the convention a very memorable experience. And for those who I did not get to speak to, I hope to do so in the future. As the convention is run by the council and volunteers, I volunteered to be part of the stewarding team and I really enjoyed it. I wanted to give something back but also knew it would help me meet lots of other members. The selfie pics in the gallery below will give you an idea of some that I met and spoke to. The photos only give a small glimpse of who I met and I am already making arrangements to meet some very soon. The event ran from 9am each day with lectures, competitions, shows and a big Gala show on the Saturday night. The club even put on coaches for when we needed it for one event. An excellent dealers hall was also arranged and which was used as the main social meeting point. An important part of the convention was the competitions with a close up and stage competition hosted by the club. Two enjoyable shows and a prize giving. Stand out lectures for me were Max Fulham, Russ Brown and Dr Naomi Paxton. The Saturday night Gala show was also open to the public and the council and Presidents were in attendance. I can't wait to write a full review of the Gala Show for the IBM magazine "Key Ring". Star performers included Aaron Crow, Olivier Henning, Max Fulham, Mark James, and Taylor & Rebecca. Ada Campe (aka Dr Naomi Paxton) also did a fantastic job hosting the show and was very funny. While I did enjoy all performances, highlights were watching Aaron Crow and discovering Olivier Henning and Ada Campe. Aaron is of course a well know act and not only was it a highlight to see him perform live, I had the opportunity to chat with him. Olivier and his manipulation act was also mind blowing. As I was stewarding throughout the weekend, there was the odd show or lecture that I missed but that was my choice. I also had the freedom to go and see whatever events I wanted. There are too many events to list them all but I did particularly enjoy the Sunday afternoon events which had a strong line up of lectures and then John Archer's show. As a fan of John, he made my night by selecting me to join in and I got a John Archer zero dollar bill for my collection. Sadly the event was over too soon after a packed three day agenda with a closing ceremony that saw the new President's installation (Aidan Heritage). Congrats to Aidan and thank you to past President Philip Partridge. Below is a gallery of my weekend which includes selfies, collectables and some signed playing cards. I have also updated the collectables pages in this site. If you are interested in becoming a member of the IBM, please do visit their website. https://britishring.org.uk . You can also view the convention brochure here . A big thank you to all the IBM members, council and Presidents for putting on this excellent convention. Selfies Collectables Signed Cards
- You Tube Travel Vlogs
You Tube Travel Vlogs You Tube is of course a very popular channel for creators, with a wide variety of programming available. While I course love watching magic related content, I also enjoy watching travel vlogs. While many exist, here are a few of my favourites and what makes them so appealing to watch and follow. Often combing travel with food review or since Covid, some channels adapting and even renovating RV's. Getting close to 6 years, I started following "The Endless Adventure" with Eric and Allison. Then more recently watching "The Magic Geekdom" with Cara and Jeremy. I have also followed the UK's Travel Beans. Each channel offering something different. It just so happens that all three channels are couples who have given up the day to day life of a fixed abode for travel. Clever planning and running businesses from Both channels are travel related with different focuses. Each presented and content edited by each couple. The Endless Adventure With Eric and Allison Visit channel I have followed the particular channel since 2018 and at the time they had about 200K subscribers, which has now grown to 687K subscribers. The channel actually started in Oct 2015 and they have posted some 851 videos! Initially the focus was on travel, visiting cities in Europe, Middle East and worlwide. An active channel with regular videos posted and some great city and food reviews. Of course, when covid hit, the channel had to find a new direction and undertook a restoration project of an RV (recreational vehicle). Now travelling again, mainly around the Americas, they are currently touring Canda and Alaska in their RV. A fun channel to follow. "The Magic Geekdom" With Jeremy and Cara Visit channel This channel has its own focus with US couple Jeremy and Cara focusing on the UK and Europe. While the channel started in 2015, I suspect that the format has changed and in the last 2.5 years, Jeremy and Cara started travelling. Currently they have 53.1 k subscribers and 280 videos. The videos are very well researched and are informative. They are very laid back and it is enjoyable watching them on screen. I particularly enjoy their UK videos and they have taught me a lot about my own country. It is like viewing the UK through a fresh pair of eyes. Some of the focus is food and they will review supermarkets, take-aways and restaurants, and of course a focus on cities. I may have first discovered this channel a couple of years ago but have only more recently followed all the time. Probably my favourite travel vlog currently. I like the laid back style of Jeremy and Cara's fun and informative talks to camera. My recommended channel to follow. "Travel Beans" With Alex and Emma Visit channel Out of the three channels that I follow, this is the first UK couple. While I am not as familiar with Travel Beans as the other two channels, it is very popular. The focus is again on worldwide travel and can be US focused at times when I have watched. Travel has been by RV/camoervan and they have current subscribers that are at an impressive 375K. They started travelling in May 2015 with some 572 videos. I first discovered them a few years ago and many will know them for the roadside fire that destroyed their van some 18 months a go or so. They now have a young child with some travel closer to home. Occasionally featuring in the Endless Adventure videos. Summary For anyone wanting to learn about foreign travel, countries, cities and food, all of these channels are worth viewing and following. As You Tube, many other channels exist to discover and all channels are supported by adverts. All these channels offer bonus features and benefits if you support them as a patron. As I have watched The Endless Adventure for a long time, we did subscribe through Patreon for a while. If I was to do so again, I would probably support The Magic Geekdom. Do check out these channels and let me know what you think.

- Theatre Listing Updates
Theatre Listing Updates For those who know me, I always try and book performances of live magic, comedians and occasionally music. I have noticed that for some non magic theatre shows organised for later in the year, a new wave of cancellations and rescheduling of shows appears to be happening again. Currently a lot of magic theatre shows that were intended or rescheduled for September still appear to be happening. I have to wonder though if they will actually go ahead. I hope so, but safety of course has to come first. I guess a lot depends on whether the 2 metre social distancing rule stays. I will take a look through all the shows again this weekend for any changes and I will be keeping an eye on events. When I last checked at the weekend just gone, the only change was that 4MG had cancelled their July shows. Thank god we have Zoom in the meantime to get our magic fix. If you haven’t tried one, you should. They work really well and are very interactive. I was able to confirm another Zoom private booking yesterday for this weekend. A magic show that is being hosted by magician Elliot Bibby. Should be good and I am looking forward to his performance. The Tom Brace Zoom Magic show “Connected” which is a public event is still on sale as well for Sunday the 28th of June. Of course, I have my ticket already. Check out the Zoom magic page for details.
